Blarney Castle & Gardens
Blarney Castle and Gardens, located in County Cork, is steeped in history, myth, and natural beauty, making it a cherished destination for visitors from around the world. The centrepiece of the estate is Blarney Castle itself, a medieval stronghold built over 600 years ago by the MacCarthy dynasty. The castle’s iconic feature is the Blarney Stone, said to bestow the “gift of gab” upon those who kiss it. Legend has it that kissing the stone requires leaning backwards over a parapet, an act known as “blarneying,” which has attracted visitors seeking eloquence for centuries.
Surrounding the castle are the magnificent Blarney Gardens, spanning over 60 acres of lush greenery and vibrant flora. These meticulously landscaped gardens feature diverse botanical collections, including rare plants, colourful flower beds, and tranquil pathways that lead to scenic viewpoints and hidden gems.
One of the highlights of the gardens is the Poison Garden, which showcases a collection of poisonous plants from around the world. Guided tours provide insights into the medicinal uses and dangers associated with these plants, adding an educational element to the visitor experience.
The Rock Close, a mystical and enchanting area within the estate, is steeped in folklore and ancient mythology. Here, visitors can discover Druidic stones, a Dolmen (or portal tomb), and the Wishing Steps, each with its own tale of magic and mystery.
