Built in 1195 by Richard de Clare, also known as Strongbow, the castle was originally a Norman fortress designed to control the strategic crossing of the River Nore. Over the centuries, it evolved from a medieval stronghold into a grand residence, reflecting the changing times and tastes of its occupants

The castle’s most prominent period of ownership was under the Butler family, who acquired it in 1391. For nearly 600 years, they transformed the castle into a symbol of wealth and power, adding various architectural features, including impressive Victorian-style interiors, lush gardens, and an expansive parkland. The Long Gallery, with its vibrant painted ceiling and collection of portraits, remains a highlight for visitors.

In 1967, the Butler family sold the castle to the people of Kilkenny for a token sum of £50, initiating its restoration and transformation into a public heritage site. Today, Kilkenny Castle is managed by the Office of Public Works and stands as one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions.
