Malahide Castle, located in the seaside town of Malahide, County Dublin, has a rich history that spans nearly 800 years. It was originally built in the 12th century by the Talbot family, who were granted the land by King Henry II in 1185. The castle remained in the Talbot family’s possession for almost 800 years, making it one of the longest family-held estates in Ireland.

The castle started as a medieval fortress and was expanded over the centuries, evolving from a defensive structure into a grand family home. During the 17th century, under the rule of Cromwell, the castle was temporarily seized, but it was later returned to the Talbots after the Restoration of King Charles II. It saw further development in the 18th century, when it was remodelled in a Gothic Revival style.

Malahide Castle played a significant role in Irish history, particularly during the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, where fourteen members of the Talbot family reportedly dined together before going to battle, many of whom would not return.

Today, Malahide Castle is a major tourist attraction, with its beautifully preserved rooms, extensive gardens, and an interactive visitor experience, providing insight into the history of both the Talbot family and the wider region.
