Tara was the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland and is probably the most important heritage site in Ireland. Its history dates back to the Neolithic period, around 5,000 years ago, with evidence of ancient burial mounds and religious monuments. Tara became the political and spiritual centre of Ireland during the Iron Age, serving as a ceremonial site where kings were inaugurated. It features notable structures like the Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny) and the Mound of the Hostages. Despite its decline in political importance by the medieval period, Tara remains a symbol of Irish heritage and mythology. The Hill of Tara also offers stunning views of the Irish countryside.
Located in County Meath, this site is historically significant for both its ancient and Christian heritage. The site was associated with Sláine mac Dela, a legendary Fir Bolg king who was believed to be buried there. Its prominence grew in the early 5th century when Saint Patrick is said to have lit a Paschal fire on the hill, defying the pagan High King of Tara and marking the introduction of Christianity to Ireland. The hill later housed a monastery, founded by St. Erc, and remains of a church and tower. Today, it symbolizes Ireland’s religious and cultural history.
This castle has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century. Built by the Conyngham family, it has been their ancestral home for over 300 years. The current Gothic-style structure, designed by James Gandon, was completed in 1785. Slane Castle is notable for its historical events, including being occupied by Cromwellian forces in the 17th century and the site of King George IV’s visit in 1821. In modern times, it has gained fame as a concert venue, hosting legendary acts like U2, The Rolling Stones, and Madonna in its natural amphitheatre setting.
